Welcome to a day in our classroom

Children enter our classroom at 8:50 and begin unpacking their backpacks.
Morning business begins wtih a quick trip to the bathroom, a drink of water and a sharpened pencil.
There is a graph question to answer or a class letter to read.
Morning Work is in the Morning Work Basket and is always a practice page of a skill already taught.

Once we mark our calendars with the date and weather we gather as a circle of friends on the rug for Morning Meeting.
Morning Meeting offers the opportunity to bond as a class.  We say hello to all our friends and share important events and thoughts.
(We have learned to greet each other in 10 different languages!)

Our entire morning instructional time is devoted to Language Arts.
We use a Balanced Literacy Approach to teach reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Students participate in read alouds, shared reading with an anthology text, guided reading with leveled text, independent reading, and systematic word study.
In addition, children are engaged daily in modeled writing, shared writing, interactive writing, writers' workshop and independent writing.

Every morning we practice the spelling of our weekly word wall words with cheers and movement.
We continue word study with a program called Fundations, where we bridge phonics with literacy.
Here we learn to "tap out words", learn grammatical rules, and practice writing a multitude of words on our hand-held whiteboards.

Around 10:45 we have snack and a bathroom break.  When the weather is nice we try to go out for a 10/15 minute recess, too.

Math is a very active time in First Grade.

We have our Specials everyday from 2:05 - 2:50.  Please see the link to the Specials Schedule on the Home Page.

Our busy day usually ends with a story.
What a perfect way to end a GREAT DAY in FIRST GRADE!
