READING OLYMPICS

Enfield's two Reading Olympics teams have been preparing for the big event which will probably be on Monday, March 22, 2010.  Since the end of February, they attended after-school meetings every Monday. Last week, they chose names for their teams - Enfield's Reading Gods and Goddesses and Enfield's Title Titans. On February, they chose tee shirt colors. The Reading Gods and Goddesses will wear sapphire shirts, and the Title Titans will wear gold. At the meetings on March 8 and March 15, they will practice answering questions about the 45 books on the official book list.

When I get the official notice about our date to attend this very special, exciting event, I will notify every parent whose child is a member. You will also receive a notice about the pizza party we traditionally have in the cafeteria before boarding the buses to go to the Reading Olympics. Check your child's folder for these important papers.

Meeting dates in March are as follows:  March 8, March 15, March 22. For up-to-date information, check my web page regularly.

MS READATHON

Students who participated in the MS ReadaThon must return their envelopes as soon as possible. Before your child brings the envelope to the library, please make sure you total the books, sponsors, and money. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society requests that you write a check for the total amount raised and do not put cash in the envelope. Also, please circle the letter for the prize your child deserves which depends on the amount of money collected. Don't forget to circle "T1" or "T2" for sports tickets if your child collected $20 or more. Please read the prize section carefully.

After I receive all envelopes, I will send them to the National MS Society in Philadelphia where they will be processed for prizes. These will take 4-6 weeks to arrive at Enfield and be given to your child.

Thank you for encouraging your child to participate in this very worthwhile cause. Your donation provides hope for people with multiple sclerosis. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at peggy_thomas@sdst.org.

VISITING AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR

All classes enjoyed presentations by noted author and illustrator, Floyd Cooper on Tuesday, March 2. He entertained his audience by demonstrating his unique art technique of erasing paint with a stretchy eraser to create a picture. He also drew carricatures from scribbles selected children made on easel paper. Everyone was thrilled to learn that he/she would receive a stretchy eraser from Mr. Cooper. They will also receive an original bookmark drawn by Floyd Cooper.

For many years, it has become customary to have  "Cookies and Milk Night" on the evening before we have a famous author/illustrator visit Enfield. This year, approximately 200 children came in their pajamas, some with their "cuddly friends," and listened to stories read by teachers. They ended this fun evening with cookies and milk in the cafeteria and by going to the gym to have their picture taken. To see these pictures, check out the posters in the library and hallway.

Diane Smith and Karen Naghaski deserve a thunderous applause for organizing this very fun evening. Of course, it would not have been as successful without the help of many parent volunteers and our teachers, Marie Binkowski, Kathy Evans, Peg McCuen, Sharon Murphy, and Teresa Straffin, who returned to school to read to the children. Many, many thanks!
